We are pleased to announce that the 100th Anniversary Exhibit of the Gardena High School Art Collection will be open at the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University in Orange from May 11th through October 19th, 2019.  This extraordinary exhibit will include nearly the entire collection of more than 70 of the paintings acquired between 1919 and 1956.  Never before has this expansive collection been seen by the public.

Accompanying the exhibit is a book of over 200 pages with color plates of the entire collection and its historical background.  The collection includes paintings representing many renowned California Impressionist artists.   The book, titled Gifted: Collecting the Art of California at Gardena High School, 1919-1956, was extensively researched and written by Susan Anderson, art historian, and tells the remarkable story relating how the collection came to be as each graduating class selected a painting to add to the collection.  Also included is information about each painting in the exhibit.  This valuable collection has garnered much acclaim and is the most exceptional collection of its kind gathered by students.

The book is available now.  The proceeds will go directly to cover the cost of publication, further conservation and care of the collection, and educational endeavors.  Please buy the book!  It is beautiful, informative, and commemorates the legacy of this extraordinary collection.

We are deeply gratified to see most of the collection restored, conserved and soon available for the public to appreciate. The book commemorates the legacy its unique story. Many thanks to all of you who have supported these efforts. It could not have been done without you.
